The university was established through an Act of Parliament (Act 22) on 14 November 2008 as a Central University. IMU plays a significant role in developing skilled human resources for the maritime sector of India. Every year 14 November is celebrated as “IMU Day.”

Nautical Science

• Master (Foreign Going) Certificate of Competency issued by Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India

• Minimum 6 months sailing experience at Management level as per STCW Convention

• VICT / TOTA Course Certificate or willingness to complete the course

• AECS and TSTA Course Certificate or willingness to complete the course

Marine Engineering

• MEO Class–I (Motor) Certificate of Competency issued by Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India

• Minimum 6 months sailing experience at Management level as per STCW Convention

• VICT / TOTA Course Certificate or willingness to complete the course

• AECS and TSTA Course Certificate or willingness to complete the course

Paramedic

• B.Sc. Nursing / Diploma / Degree from a recognized university in a related field
