The geographical jurisdiction of North Gujarat University encompasses four districts – Mehsana, Patan, Banaskantha and Sabarkantha. Each of these districts has its own unique heritage. Part of the region lies towards the desert of Kutch, while the north-eastern side consists of forested rocky regions inhabited by tribal communities.

The economy of the area is largely agriculture-based, with only a few towns and no major cities. Most of the population resides in villages.

To meet the cultural and educational needs of this region, North Gujarat University was established through Ordinance No. 5 of 1986 dated 17 May 1986, later enacted as the North Gujarat University Act No. 22 of 1986 on 11 September 1986 by the Legislative Assembly of Gujarat. Since then, the University has steadily grown and expanded.

• Master’s Degree with minimum 55% marks in a relevant subject from a recognized university.

• Candidate must have cleared NET / SLET / SET conducted by UGC/CSIR or equivalent.

• Candidates with Ph.D. as per UGC Regulations 2009/2016 may be exempted from NET/SLET/SET.

Ph.D. candidates registered before 11 July 2009 will be governed by earlier regulations and may be exempted from NET/SLET/SET if they satisfy the following conditions:

• Ph.D. awarded in regular mode

• Thesis evaluated by at least two external examiners

• Open Ph.D. viva conducted

• Minimum two research papers published (one in refereed journal)

• Two papers presented in conferences/seminars supported by UGC/ICSSR/CSIR

Alternatively, Ph.D. obtained from a foreign university ranked within top 500 in QS / THE / ARWU rankings will also be considered.
