The origin of Zakir Husain Delhi College can be traced back to the late 17th century, when a Madrasa was established by Ghaziuddin Khan, a leading commander of Aurangzeb and the father of the first Nizam of Hyderabad.

The historic complex, which includes his tomb, a mosque and a madrasa, still exists near Ajmeri Gate close to the shrine of Hazrat Hafiz Sadullah in New Delhi.
